The Main Thing: The Sales Floor Manager must embody the behaviors of servant leadership in order to manage and direct team members in a way that results in an exceptional customer experience.

As Team Leader: As a team leader, the Sales Manager embodies servant leadership characteristics, such as putting others above oneself. S/he must be willing to do whatever it takes, setting the tone with hard work and dedication. S/he must have the ability to confront and coach team member's performance issues and give appropriate praise to team members when exhibiting ideal behaviors.

Regular Duties Include: Assigns tasks to team members and ensure completion in a timely manner Schedules team members using store scheduling framework - balancing adequate coverage and work/life balance Confronts and corrects team member performance issues and give appropriate praise Informs team members of new company policies Coaches team members in processes that Hartville Hardware has adopted Ensures that monthly department meetings and annual reviews are completed As Customer Service Leader: As a customer service leader, the Sales Manager must provide direction to all supervised team members on the floor through modeled behavior. S/he must always treat customers and team members the way that they would want to be treated. S/he is responsible for the customer shopping experience in their department first and throughout the store second, continually looking for ways to improve customer experience.

Regular Duties Include: Being an advisor and coach in resolving customer issues Is the lead contact on the floor for all promotions, informing team members of upcoming events Trains team members in customer service best practices Resources and schedules any department specific training needed by team members Implements new department specific processes with the goal of alleviating customer service issues

Sales Floor Leader: As a sales floor leader, the department manager is one who ensures the retail sales floor and back stock areas are organized and properly stocked in order to maximize profit in their area.

Regular Duties Include: Works in sync with the relevant Merchandise Manager advising on product selection and ordering need Keeps sales floor and back stock areas clean and orderly Makes sure shelves are cleaned, stocked, and priced correctly
Helps maintain location codes Ensures proper signage is made and placed where and when needed Prepares department(s) for promotions or sales Updates price changes on the floor within 24 hours of receiving them Reviews Scan Outs promptly and return to relevant Merchandise Manager Spends a majority of their time on the sales floor when not working on administrative or other assigned tasks Professional Development: A Sales Manager must invest in themselves for future growth and development. S/he must be able to implement a strategic annual growth plan, as well as meet regularly with the Division Manager. S/he must be a lifelong learner who is teachable.

Regular Duties Include: Meet with the Division Manager regularly Attend manager meetings, necessary trade shows and professional events as assigned by the Division Manager Willing to pursue and/or agree to training involving sales, customer service and relevant department products Intentionally looks for ways to improve themselves as well as those around him/her Understands and utilizes key profit indicators

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Competency Statement(s): Management skills - Ability to organize and direct oneself while effectively supervising others. Previous experience supervising others is preferred. Retail sales - Ability to use appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to gain acceptance of a product, service or an idea. Previous retail sales experience required. Customer service oriented - Ability to take care of customers’ needs while following company procedures. Communication skills - Strong oral and written communication skills required. Organizational skills - Time and material management skills. Ability to keep accurate records, data, paperwork. Ability to attend to daily, monthly and yearly calendar goals. Ability to focus on goals to obtain a predetermined result. Problem-Solving ability - Ability to deal with others in a variety of situations, control emotions, and work under stressful situations while implementing viable solutions.

Other Skills and Abilities: Education: High School graduate or GED required; some college-level coursework preferred. Computer skills - Working knowledge of computers required. Language skills: Ability to read, analyze, interpret and communicate effectively using the English language. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public. Physical requirements: Ability to stand or by on his or her feet for up to 10 hours per day. Ability to carry up to 50 pounds occasionally, less than 50 pounds frequently. Walking, sitting, and climbing ladders is often required.

Department Specific Skills: Measurable familiarity with electrical, plumbing, and retail hardware. Ability to discern and fulfill contractor’s needs in relation to current product offerings in electrical, plumbing, and hardware.

Work Environment: Working primarily in a climate-controlled environment with a moderate noise level.
